On the heels of their 25th anniversary, Rova is still as creative, inspiring, original and quirky as ever. Creators of 'Radar', an entire system of structured improvisation, the quartet has periodically looked outward for new sounds and traditions. Member-composed Jon Raskin's The Hear and Now incorporates Asian concepts of improvisation, fusing instruments and musicians from Burma, Korea, Japan and China with the Western sax quartet.&#13;
&#13;
"I've created a new work, called The Hear and Now for the Rova Saxophone Quartet, and six guest musicians from a variety of non-Western musical backgrounds, with strong improvisational traditions. Although Rova has been creating works for improvisers for many years, most of the works have been for Saxophone Quartet and/or for larger ensembles of Western instruments. The Hear and Now draws on a method of group improvisation developed by Rova called "Radar," a form of structured improvisation and composition in real time. What really differentiates the Radar series from most structured improvisation is that the cues, parameters, hand signals, and "rules" are predetermined, but the performers create the structure itself. The flow of sonic materials and content is decided in real time. I've also incorporated the five Chinese harmonic sets Zhi, Shang, Yu, Jue and Gong into the Radar mode, to act as color generators that can be used by the performers to alter the music landscape. The written material is organized in a manner that will allow the various musicians to interact with each other in new contexts. It will, hopefully, allow room for the improvisational ideas from each of these master musicians to mingle and create a new approach for all concerned, generating new roles and means of expression." - Jon Raskin.</description>
